We are pleased to be your child's teachers for this school year!

Here are a few reminders for first grade:  Please be sure to check your child's folder daily to look for important notes and homework.  Look for new word cards to study or books to read.  The word cards should stay in their word box at home after they have practiced them to allow for periodic review.

We are lucky to have Art Appreciation once per month with the help of parents from our rooms. We also have art on Friday afternoons, schedule permitting. 

Gym and Music days alternate.  

Language Arts: In first grade we read a variety of genres including fiction, non fiction, biography, poetry and songs. Through our reading curriculum the students are learning many different strategies and skills. Some of these include : phonemic awareness, building sight vocabulary recognition, prediction, main idea, short and long vowels, digraphs, sequencing, identifying story elements, and reading for a variety of purposes.  We use the Harcourt Trophies series as part of our reading curriculum.

Math: During math time, the students are exposed to a variety of skills through problem solving. Some of the skills include: patterns, number and number sense, addition and subtraction, time and money, measurement, geometry, problem-solving and graphing.  We use Math Trailblazers as a primary resource for our math curriculum. 

Science Units:  Our FOSS science include: New Plants, Balance and Motion, Pebbles, Sand, and Silt
