Second Grade
Second grade
is a year to build on the foundation from first grade.
In reading, the students are exposed to many different
genres in literature. Students
learn and develop strategies to become better readers.
Spelling, grammar, and writing are all part of the
Harcourt Trophies Reading Program. We also strongly
encourage students to participate in the Accelerated
Reader program.
In Social Studies, students learn about maps and
directions along with the discovery of the Americas (early
explorers), the Native Americans, the Europeans coming to
America, and finally the settlements becoming colonies.
The FOSS science
units in second grade are: Air and Weather, Solids and
Liquids, and Insects.
During the
year, the students enjoy many “extras” to enhance their
education. Art Moms and Dads provide wonderful
experiences for the students to show their creative side.
Field trips provide educational opportunities outside the
classroom. Cultural Arts programs provide learning
experiences beyond the curriculum.
