Third Grade Curriculum
Third grade is
a year of many changes-reading to learn, learning study
skills, doing more independent work, and maintaining an
assignment notebook, just to name a few. Please
check your child's assignment notebook daily and sign that
homework has been done and checked. It is also
important to check your child's take home folder for
homework papers and important notes. Your work at
home with your child is so important.
Reading
In third grade,
we focus on a variety of genres. We also strongly
encourage your child to read Accelerated Reader (AR)
books. Please read every day with your child as it
strengthens the skills they have learned in the primary
grades.
Math
We focus on
operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division), as well as time, money, geometry and
measurement. Problem solving and "what, why and how"
to get an answer is also taught using Problem of the Day
and daily lessons.
Science
Our FOSS units
of study are: Measurement (metric), Earth Materials
(rocks and minerals), and
Life Structures (crayfish).
Social Studies
Our
units of study include map skills, the road to the
American Revolution, the battles and ending to the
Revolution and branches of government.
Character Standards
Each month a
different character standard is taught in third grade.
ISAT Testing
In March, the
third graders are required to take the ISATs (Illinois
State Achievement Tests.) The students are tested in
reading and mathematics. We prepare for
these tests throughout the school year.
