The media center at
Fierke is truly the heart of the school, both physically
and cognitively. The goal of the media center is to
provide resources to students and staff to enhance
learning. With over 12,000 books and other materials, it
is possible to find information on any subject
imaginable. Along with an on-line cataloging system and
internet access, the potential for accessing and acquiring
information is unlimited. Students may visit the media
center as a class or individually throughout the school
day.
In addition to
providing resources, the media center director also
delivers instruction on information literacy skills. In
collaboration with the classroom teacher, the media center
director designs lessons that instruct students in how to
use information productively. Information skills are
integrated into all curricular areas and grade levels.
The combination of classroom content with media resources
will assure student proficiency in the production use of
information. There is a scope and sequence of information
literacy skills that are taught at each grade level.
These are based on the Language Arts Descriptors developed
by the Illinois State Board of Education.
