ISAT

We are in one of our most challenging weeks of the year, ISAT testing is here!  Our 3-5th grade classrooms are testing in reading, math and writing.  Fourth grade is doing science.  The results of this testing helps us to better understand how to direct our instruction to meet the needs of our students at Memorial.  We will be notified by Illinois State Board of Education of our results in early summer.  Parents will receive results for their individual children in the fall.

Congratulations to Nick F., 5th grade student, for designing the ISAT t-shirts for our 3 - 5th graders!  Students were able to purchase a t-shirt as a greatly reduced cost, thanks to the student council.

Thank you for making sure your child is here every day and has had a good nights sleep and breakfast!!!

Bus Safety

Please speak to your children about bus safety.  All students and families signed an agreement in the fall about riding the bus.  This agreement included adhering to the rules, which include staying in one seat for the entire ride, keeping their hands and feet to themselves and being respectful to the driver and other students.  We have viewed many bus tapes in the past several weeks. Many students are not following rules.  Drivers are encouraged to provide conduct reports to the principal for student behavior.  Students can be suspended from the bus for inappropriate behavior on the bus.  Ask your child if he/she is in  an assigned seat.  If so, then there have already been reported problems on the bus.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

Cell Phones

Increasing numbers of students are bringing cell phones to school.  While cell phones are allowed at school, there are some specific rules regarding cell phones.

· Cell phones must remain in lockers or checked into the office.  We are not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones.

· Cell phones can only be used before/after school to contact parents for a ride.  We are learning that cell phones are being used on the bus to text, take pictures of other students and play inappropriate pre-recorded messages and videos.   Students found to be engaged in this behavior will have cell phones confiscated.  A parent conference will be required in order to return the cell phone.  Students will not be allowed to bring a cell phone to school, if they engage in these behaviors.

We have also learned that students are using social networks (Twitter, Facebook and MySpace) to exchange inappropriate messages about fellow students.  In a recent gathering of students, numerous students shared that they engage in social networking.  Please speak to your child about social networking  and the consequences for inappropriate use of these sites.  Cyber-bullying is a serious offense, outlined in the student handbook.

PTA Happenings!

The Fun Fair was a great success this past week!.  Students and families had a wonderful time!   We had a great response to the need for volunteers!!  Thank you to Mrs. D’Amico and “her crew”!  We had a number of parent and high school volunteers working at the prize table, kitchen and the games.  The bake sale, conducted by Student Council raised money to purchase t-shirts for our 3-5th grade students taking the ISAT!   Thanks go out to Mrs. Stec (& her husband), Mrs. Beaty, Mrs. Searcy, Ms. Seery, and Mrs. Payonk for all their help.

Help for Haiti

Our Memorial students have had a tremendous response to our efforts to assist with the earthquake disaster in Haiti!  Students purchased wrist bands to raise money for this tragic earthquake and the devastation it left behind.  Our students continue to talk about it and ways they can assist the people of Haiti.  We are again reminded of the kindness of our students and families and thoughts for others who are  in need.
