Fierke 2nd Grade Spring Concert

3rd Grade volunteers at The Little Red School House

Third grade students volunteered at The Little Red School House in Palos Park on May 6 for their service-learning project. They culled garlic mustard, an invasive species, from the School House grounds. Students applied their knowledge about food webs and learned that garlic mustard inhibits native plants and limits animals’ food supply.

Each garlic mustard plant produces on about 2,000 seeds. Students calculated that through their hard work they prevented more than 4 MILLION seeds from being released! They celebrated their accomplishment afterwards with a picnic lunch in a nearby forest preserve.

First-year Music Teacher Named Top-Shelf Educator by Chicago Blackhawks

A first-year music teacher at Fierke Education Center, Tom Gilman, received the Top-Shelf Educator award from the Chicago Blackhawks organization in February. He was awarded tickets to a Blackhawks game and a $100 gift card for his classroom, which he will use for musical instruments for his class.

“I am extremely humbled because I work in a district full of Top-Shelf Educators,” Gilman said of the award. “I wish I could share the award with the entire district.”
