Tax Abatement News ImageAt its regular March meeting, the District 146  Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution for a $1 million tax abatement for District 146 taxpayers.

An abatement is a form of a property tax reduction. In this case, the District is lowering its property taxes by $1 million for the 2020 levy, which is paid in 2021.

At the meeting, the Director of Business Services Jeff Charleston explained the District experienced a surplus during the last budget year. With the abatement resolution, the District’s Bond and Interest fund levy will be reduced, meaning the District will receive less money than it levied. The fund balances from last year’s surplus will make up the difference.

“Our Board of Education continues to be fiscally responsible on behalf of the District’s taxpayers,” said Dr. Jeff Stawick, Superintendent. “This abatement is just one example of the District budgeting and spending wisely while still offering our families the best education possible.”
