Monthly Meeting Recap

The Board of Education met on Monday, April 13 for its Regular Monthly Meeting in the cafeteria at Fierke Education Center in Oak Forest.

Fierke Principal Gina Lamorte and Social Emotional Support Specialist Sam Zimny began the meeting with an update on some of the learning and events happening lately at the school.

4th and 5th grade students from Fierke were recognized for their leadership. The students spoke about their reteaching behavior expectations, like CHAMPS, to younger students following long weekends and extended breaks. They mentioned the benefits they see in working with younger students.
The Board heard the following from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
  • A new Learning for All program will be launched to help support skill retention among K-9 students throughout the summer. The program will be promoted in May with incentives to encourage participation. Student efforts will be recognized at the beginning of the next school year.
  • Road construction near Kruse has started. The village has provided the contractor with drop-off and pick-up times. The contractors will keep the roads open during those times.
  • The Joint Annual Conference will be held November 20-22 this year. The Conference offers learning opportunities for board members, superintendents, and school business officials.
  • The CMS Spring Musical will be held on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18.
  • The Young Authors Celebration will be hosted at CMS on April 23. Everyone is welcome to attend.
  • Kindergarten screening will be held on April 29 with approximately 80 incoming students registered.
  • The District 146 Olympics were held last Friday at CMS. The event, put on by the Student Services team celebrates students who rise above and work hard every day to achieve.
  • The CMS Symphonic Band has been accepted to perform at SuperState. Entry is by audition and being selected is an honor. The band will perform at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana on May 8.
  • A draft of the e-Learning Plan was presented to the Board. It must be submitted for approval every three years.
  • Information about an intergovernmental agreement with the Tinley Park Park District was shared with the Board.
  • The Fierke PTO has committed to donating funds to help the school purchase new furniture for the Media Center. The Board will be asked to approve the donation at the May meeting.
The Board also heard the following:
  • Eileen Von Borstel, Teachers Union President, gave an update about events happening at each of the schools, including IAR testing, science fairs, reading programs, and end-of-the-year countdowns.
  • Karen Lyons, ESP Union President, announced that contract negotiations have begun.
  • Director of Business Services Jeff Charleston, CSBO provided the Board with contract details for the renewals of the First Student regular transportation service contract and Sunrise special education transportation service contract.
  • Communications Specialist Keegan Kociss informed the Board that new ADA Web Compliance standards are taking effect at the end of the month. These new regulations will require changes to some of the District’s current communication practices.
  • Curriculum Director Carey Radke provided a list of surplus curriculum and related items to be sold, donated, or disposed of.
  • A suggested list of regular Board Meeting dates for the 2026-2027 school year was presented.

The Board took the following action at the meeting:
  • Approved administrator contracts for the 2026-2027 school year.
  • Approved the renewal of the food service contract with Whitsons Nutrition.

The Board met in closed session to discuss collective bargaining.

The minutes of the April meeting will be available on Diligent once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting.
 

Next Board Meeting

The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Memorial School, 6701 W. 179th Street in Tinley Park.
