Monthly Meeting Recap

The Board of Education met on Monday, May 11 for its Regular Monthly Meeting in the cafeteria at Memorial School in Tinley Park.

At the beginning of the meeting, the District’s Young Authors Grand Champions were honored by the Board. Recognized were Teegan Kempen (1st Grade, Kruse), Ena Schmidt (2nd Grade, Fulton), Hanan Hazama (4th Grade, Kruse), and Declan Doogan (6th Grade, CMS). All Young Authors participants were celebrated at a special event in April.

Following the recognition, Memorial Principal Dr. Joe Trsar provided an update on some of the learning and events happening lately at the school. He focused on Parent Partnerships, speaking about the collaboration between the school and the PTA. He thanked the parents, volunteers, Administration, and Board Members for their support.

During the Superintendent’s Report, the Board heard the following from Dr. Jeff Stawick:
  • Last week was Staff Appreciation Week. Dr. Stawick thanked the Board for the gift and luncheon they provided to all staff.
  • The last day of school will be May 29, which will be a half-day for students. There are a lot of exciting events and fun opportunities at each of the buildings as the final day approaches.
  • Central’s 8th Grade Graduation will be on May 19 at 6 p.m. Board Members are invited to join. Dr. Stawick wished all graduates the best of luck as they move onto their high school careers.
  • This year, the Joint Annual Conference will be November 20-22. The Board was asked to let Angela McGhee know if they are not able to attend.
The Board also heard the following:
  • During public comment, Central Middle School paraprofessional Ann Corns spoke about the paraprofessional duties and gave examples of what their days entail.
  • Eileen Von Borstel, Teachers Union President, gave an update about end-of-the-year events happening at each of the schools. Mentioned were events like the 8th grade dance, the CMS musical, Explore More days, book fairs, spirit days, and assemblies.
  • Karen Lyons, ESP Union President gave an update on contract negotiations with the District.
  • Curriculum Director Carey Radke presented an updated draft of the District’s eLearning Plan. A public hearing will be held on June 1 before the Regular Board Meeting. The Board will vote on the plan during the Regular Meeting.
  • Director of Business Services Jeff Charleston presented a three-year auditing services agreement with Cherry Bekaert. The Board will vote on the agreement at the Regular June meeting.

The Board took the following action at the meeting:
  • Approved a three-year contract for regular education transportation services with First Student (formerly American School Bus Company).
  • Approved a three-year contract for special education transportation services with Sunrise.
  • Approved an Intergovernmental Agreement between the District and the Tinley Park Park District.
  • Approved a gift to Fierke Education Center from their PTO.
  • Approved a list of Board of Education Meeting dates for the 2026-2027 school year.
  • Approved curriculum items to be declared as surplus for sale, donation, or disposal.

The Board met in closed session to discuss personnel and collective bargaining issues.

The minutes of the May meeting will be available on Diligent once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting.
 

Next Board Meeting

The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, June 1, 2026 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at The Robert Procunier Administration Center, 6611 W. 171st Street in Tinley Park.
