Monthly Meeting Recap

The Board of Education met on Monday, August 10 for its Regular Monthly Meeting at the Robert Procunier Administration Center.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick informed the Board:

  • The District-wide welcome back to staff, including the Superintendent's Keynote, will be on August 25. The first day of school for students is August 26.
  • The District welcomed new administrators this summer including Special Education Coordinator Dr. Laura Kiel-Taff and Memorial Principal Mrs. Julie Russell. Samantha Zimny is serving as the interim Principal at Kruse.
  • The schools and District are coordinating parent communication to families that include information and key dates. Today, parents received a Back-to-School email from their building principals. On August 17, student schedules, homerooms, and bus routes will be emailed via PowerSchool.

The Board also heard the following:

  • Director of Curriculum and Instruction Carey Radke said New Educator Orientation begins on August 11. The three-day orientation reflects the District's commitment to supporting new staff and ensuring educators are prepared to provide high-quality learning experiences for students.
  • Mrs. Radke also informed the Board that the District's Advanced Learning identification criteria has been updated to better measure student achievement. The revised criteria expands access to enrichment opportunities for students.
  • Kelly Voliva, Assistant Superintendent, discussed the Summer Learning program that ended last week. The Extended School Year program was held from July 6-30. In lieu of the District's traditional Summer School program, families were offered opportunities to extend summer learning at home through community visits, online games, and other fun activities.
  • The Director of Buildings and Grounds Matt Shanahan shared that the domestic hot water heater project at Fulton has been completed and the roof repair at Kruse and Fierke are nearly done. The roofing project is expected to be finished before school begins. A multi-year project to repair asphalt and parking lot deficiency has begun. All playgrounds will be repaired, sealed, and striped before school begins. The renovations to the bathrooms and office area at CMS are also complete. The storms in late July caused damage to the garage roof located on the Sandidge property. An insurance claim has been filed and repair estimates are being sought.
  • Karen Lyons, the ESP Union president, said the District has scheduled paraprofessional training on August 18 and 19. She also reported members are ready for the school year with only a few ESP positions still available for the upcoming school year.
  • An Orland Park parent addressed the Board asking for reconsideration of the District's decision to not provide her student transportation to St. Michael School in Orland Park.
  • The Preliminary Budget for Fiscal Year 2027 was presented by Jeff Charleston, Director of Business Services and CSBO.

The Board took the following action at the meeting:

  • Approved the Title I Family Engagement Plan as required by the Illinois Consolidated District Plan process.
  • Approved a trip for the CMS Symphonic Band for Spring 2027. Details of the trip are being kept private so Director Jason Freeland can surprise the students.
  • Approved a gift to Fulton School from their PTO. The donation of playground enhancements includes stencils, a movement pack, and a Gaga Ball pit.
  • Approved Policy Changes that were submitted as information at the June meeting.

Prior to adjourning, the Board met in Closed Session to discuss personnel matters.

The minutes of the August meeting will be available on Diligent once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting.
